Not that it will help Nader, but....

Matt Gonzalez a Green party member, Supervisor and former President of the SF board of Supervisors has accepted the role as running mate with Ralph Nader's doomed campaign.

This bothers me for several reasons, Matt is a really great guy and has been a good Supervisor for San Francisco, he was instrumental in bringing Instant run off voting to our city.  He has been an ardent fighter for the inner city poor as well as an anti violence advocate.

Some of his stands have been controversial for sure, like his positive stance on surveillance camera's in area's that have had historically high homicide rates.  A principled stand balancing first amendment rights and security for troubled neighborhoods.

I am somewhat sorry to see Matt connect himself with Nader like this, i think it will only diminish his stature and future respectability in the political world that is San Francisco.

I would be curious to hear what others thought about this move?  Will this be a good or bad thing for Matt?

If Nader wanted to be relevant to progressive politics, he would have campaigned for whoever in the Democratic primary was closest to his views, Kucinich, Gravel, whoever.

Nader is a joke, and no self-respecting progressive should associate with him.

Well I agree and it really disappoints me that Matt would make this move as he has so much potential and I personally think this will harm his career and his credibility not only with the Green party in San Francisco, but also with progressives throughout the country.

Re: Not that it will help Nader, but.... (2.00 / 1)

Everyone has a right to run. Democrats should view this as a challenge to improve themselves so much that people will not feel like voting third party. I want more people to challenge the system even if the candidate I am supporting is the Democratic nominee. I support Obama and I say if Obama wins, bring on the challenge. If we can't beat the Republicans after a disastrous 8 years, we do not deserve to win.

This is healthy for the long term. It forces each party to be on their toes. DEmocrats can always fund a third party guy with right wing leanings if they want to return the favor they accuse the Republicans iof doing in the past.
